Venture capital companies are now worth more than
the entire publicly-listed, world-renowned industrial companies. This
sentiment is not only shown in the hype around recent IPOs (and the last
rare IPO was in 2009), but also by the sheer amount of attention
they are receiving from fund managers and index funds.
The annual figure for all VC deals in 2006 was $3.9bn. As of
October 2011, these deals have been worth $119.9bn and are therefore the
largest capital markets transactions in history.
Investors are ready to pour in dollars and
bless this blossoming young industry. What is perhaps
surprising is that there are hardly any big IPOs being completed or even
being scheduled, and it’s a trend that doesn’t look like it is going to
change.
Kantar TNS Capital Markets Investor Index is reporting a 5.7%
increase in VC deal volume in the second quarter of 2011,
with the average deal value reaching $20bn. Another report
(Venture Capital Statistics 2009) shows that the average VC
deal’s valuation at the time of closing reached $20bn in 2010,
while another report from February 2011 shows the average
deal’s value has almost doubled since the $10bn-valuation in
2006.
Global interest in investing in the next generation of
technology is of course a major driver, but there are other
immediate drivers. One big issue, which I don’t believe is
being addressed by investors, is the need to bring in
investments that are not driven by the “fickle” nature of
technology startups.
